Pinoy Big Brother 2, officially named as Pinoy Big Brother: Season 2 is the second civilian season and fourth edition overall of Pinoy Big Brother.
Background[]
Development[]
A fourth edition which was set to feature regular civilians was already confirmed as early as December 2005 and was slated to be launched on August 2006, months after Teen Edition 1.[1]
However, changes were made as ABS-CBN introduced a new Endemol reality franchise, Pinoy Dream Academy during the finale of Teen Edition 1. This prompted the network to postpone Pinoy Big Brother 2's August launch, and instead replaced by the launch of Pinoy Dream Academy. With Pinoy Dream Academy launching on August 25, 2006, the second civilian edition of Pinoy Big Brother was then moved to air on February 2007.[2] In addition, ABS-CBN eventually decided to use the Pinoy Big Brother studio as the Academy for the new musical reality show.
As early as Season 1's "Big Reunion" special, the season was promoted to be a "bigger", "better" and "more exciting" season, hinting some huge changes being made for the upcoming season. Prior to its official launch, the season was officially advertised with the tagline "Ang Tasks, mas malupit. Si Kuya, mas mahigpit. (eng. The tasks gets crueler. Big Brother gets stricter.)"
Casting[]
On June 2006, open casting auditions were officially announced for Pinoy Big Brother 2, alongside auditions for the 1st season of Pinoy Dream Academy. The open casting were held in various cities nationwide as early as May 2006 up until June 2006. Worldwide Auditions were also held on various cities overseas from July 8, 2006 to August 11, 2006. For this season's casting, the age limit was set from 20 years old to 35 years old.
The official lineup consisted of 14 housemates. However, as a first week twist, only 12 entered the house, while four potential housemates were introduced but only two would be joining the official 14 via public voting at the end of the week. Later in the season, 2 more potential housemates were sent in to the house where one was voted by the house to be an official housemate. Overall, the season's cast reached 18 contestants where 15 of them became official housemates.
Hosts[]
Toni Gonzaga, who also hosted Pinoy Dream Academy 1, reprised her duties for Pinoy Big Brother as the main presenter and narrator of the season. Mariel Rodriguez also reprised her role as the host of Pinoy Big Brother UpLate while Celebrity Edition 1 housemate Bianca Gonzalez hosted the Update segment reports.
The three hosts were joined by Season 1 housemate Jason Gainza as the Man-of-the-Street reporter for this season.
Companion Shows[]
Just like the previous seasons, this season also aired a companion program aired on Studio 23.
Asia Agcaoili reprised her hosting role for the show's companion program on Studio 23, along with the puppet Pining. Asia hosted the show with new host Sitti Navarro for this season.
Aside from Bianca Gonzalez's Updates aired throughout the day, the morning show Magandang Umaga, Pilipinas and its successor Umagang Kay Ganda also reported updates from inside the House.
Theme Song[]
For this season, the Pinoy Big Brother theme song Pinoy Ako was rehashed. This season's version of the theme song was performed by the band Cebalo whose members were Yvan Lambatan, Panky Trinidad, Eman Abatayo, and Davey Langit of Pinoy Dream Academy 1.
Production Changes[]
- Bigger House: This season had a much bigger house compared to the series' first three editions.
- More Challenging Tasks: This season featured more grueling tasks that served as a test of endurance and strength of character for all the housemates.
- Stricter Big Brother: Big Brother became stricter than ever for this season. Stricter house rules were implemented, and punishments were became more difficult. Big Brother's strictness were eventually carried over to the two succeeding editions of Season 2 era; Celebrity Edition 2 and Teen Edition Plus.
The House[]
This season's house was among the huge surprises of this season. For the first time in the series, the Pinoy Big Brother house underwent an expansion as ABS-CBN acquired and began occupying two of the adjacent vacant lots that were previously neighboring the Big Brother studio. This expansion was initially done for Pinoy Dream Academy as it transformed the Pinoy Big Brother House as its academy, and added new buildings and mentoring facilities needed for the show, as well as a façade for the Academy, which was built adjacent to the Pinoy Big Brother façade. This expansion was eventually carried over to Pinoy Big Brother 2, and has been permanently used since.
As a result of the expansion, the Season 2 house inherited some of the facilities and buildings initially used for Pinoy Dream Academy. This season now featured a large Activity Area for tasks and challenges. The Concert Hall of Pinoy Dream Academy was carried over to this season, which now became the Eviction Hall for live shows, which led to the house's entrance, be moved from the Façade to the Garden Area, as the Eviction Hall has direct access to the Garden Area. However, the original Garden Area along with the original exterior structure of the house remained, although the interior layout was completely renovated and was made bigger.
For this season, students of Philippine School of Interior Design designed the interiors of the house with contemporary styles and vibrant pop colors. The interior walls were dominated by various shades of green, red and purple, along with varying geometric wall patterns.
This season's living room featured an elongated modular seating area attached to the wall and was divided into two sections with one section slightly elevated by a platform. The men's bedroom had the beds in a linear pattern all placed in a long platform bed frame, while the women's beds in the women's bedroom were in a circular/octagonal pattern. Other seating areas aside from the main living room were also added throughout the house, as well as a gym area, a large bathroom with showers and a jacuzzi, separate restrooms for the men and women, a prayer room, and a bridge over the swimming pool. The confession room was now separated from the house by a vestibule.
Two secret areas were also in the house. The first secret area was initially occupied by the secret housemates and was separated from the garden by a gate. It was initially filled with sand and had bamboo furniture and makeshift restroom area. Afterward, the location became common knowledge for the housemates and it has been used as an activity area. The other secret area was adjacent to the confession room vestibule through a narrow hallway and had various uses throughout the season.
Season Twists[]
- Secret Housemates: Aside from the 12 official housemates who entered the Big Brother house, four secret housemates were introduced; Bodie Cruz, Jeremy Hidano, Mikah Dizon, and Maricris Dizon, and they were sent in to live in an adjacent secret area where they lived for a week. From the four, only two were able to enter as official housemates via viewers voting.
- Ligtask Games: Every week, all housemates will compete against each other in the Ligtask Games where in the winner will be granted immunity for next week's competition. In the Ligtask Games, the nominated housemates can still compete and win. However, it won't make them immune from the current week's eviction. If they won Ligtask and they weren't evicted on that week, they will be immune from the next week's nominations but if they get evicted on that week, they would lose the immunity, automatically passing the immunity power to the runner-up of the Ligtask Games instead.
- Weight conscious Big Brother: As part of Big Brother's stricter rule, the housemates must maintain their weight and must never lose or gain weight of more than 5 pounds throughout the season. If a housemate lost or gained over 5 pounds, he or she will receive an automatic nomination as punishment.
- Big Red Phone: On Day 23, a large red telephone was placed inside the House. It was announced the day before that the phone would ring in different instances, and each call would inform the housemate who would answer the call of a different reward or punishment.
- Big Brother Swap: One Pinoy Big Brother housemate would trade places with another housemate from a currently airing Big Brother franchise in another country. In this season, Bruce Quebral exchanged with Tina Semolič from Big Brother Slovenia 1 for a week and participated in various cultural tasks.
- Balik-Bahay (House Return): The first four evicted housemates from the season were brought back in the house and kept hidden in the secret room for a week and the public would vote for two evicted housemates to go back inside the house and compete as regular housemates again.
- Housemate for a Week: In partnership via Globe Telecom, one Globe subscriber would be given a chance to enter the house and live with the housemates for one week. This fan twist was won by Hanna Rodriguez who entered the house and lived with the housemates for a week. [3]

The first houseguest was Tina Semolič, as part of the Big Brother Swap with Slovenia, followed by Hanna Rodriguezwho was the winner of the Globe promotion on being a housemate for a week. The third houseguest was Pinoy Big Brother 1's Uma Khouny. Aside from the three notable house guests, this season also brought in a special guest, a Philippine mongrel dog named "Buddy" who became the house's pet dog. He had his own doghouse found in the garden, which was also painted with yellow similar to the famous Pinoy Big Brother house facade.

Big Brother Swap[]
The official website announced on Day 47 that one Philippine housemate would trade places with a housemate from the Slovenian version. Days later, Tina was chosen to swap with Bruce.
Promotion ads for this event likened this to an alien abduction because the Philippine housemates were not aware that Bruce will trade places with Tina, a foreigner, until Tina entered the Philippine House. On the other hand, the Slovenian housemates already knew of the Swap and prepared for this event, which was expected to be a cultural exchange of sorts for both sides. The swap took place starting Day 56 and ended on Day 61, when the swapped housemates returned to their respective Houses.
Tina Semolič, a 22-year-old former beauty queen, was chosen by the Philippine version's staff because of her personality "would fit well" with the Filipino housemates, as well as being nice and not too aggressive. On the other hand, Bruce was chosen by the Slovenian staff because of his physique and his "very Filipino" characteristics that would stir up competition among the men there.
To let Filipino viewers know about Bruce's situation in the Slovenian House, some footage from the Slovenian version related to Bruce was also shown, aside from the events inside the Philippine House. English conversations recorded on both Houses were subtitled into Filipino, while any Slovenian conversation and comment was dubbed over by Filipino voice actors to let the Filipino viewers understand better.
Below is a list of activities each swapped housemate did in their respective host country's Houses, aside from introductions and trading of basic phrases:

On Day 125 of the Philippine version, Tina returned to the Pinoy Big Brother house to have a celebratory dinner with the Big 4, Bea, Gee-Ann, Mickey and Wendy. She left the house the same night and participated in the Finale, where she danced various Philippine dances and took part in the awarding ceremony for the Big 4.
