I have a question about the formatting of BB Portugal 5. The Wikipedia counts the “BB ZOOM” days separate from when the HMs are in the main house. Should I change the days for our page or keep it the same?
I have a quick question about the BB Portugal contestants from other countries. Would you consider Portuguese people to be under the "Hispanic" category, or should I create a different category for it.
Hi Scoop! I'm Lostris, and I'll be taking over from Mandy as Big Brother's Wiki Manager, since she has since her introduction been hired as a full-time staff. So while she will assist as a community manager, I'll be serving as your direct line to Fandom staff and as a general community support with anything and everything to do with the wiki. I want to emphasize that I'm not here to take over, I am just here to provide more on site support should you so desire. I will also be getting in contact with the rest of the admins to introduce myself and inform them of this change.
In case you didn't read it before, I want to leave you with two link to fairly recent Fandom update in regards to the UCP (Unified Community Platform):
Great to hear back from you. Considering that COVID-19 has an effect on us all, wiki-activity and editing etc included, you may also always contact me too if you have an idea or something to keep up morale sort of speak on the wiki, if you have a fun idea to do with the community that could use some Fandom assistance. Bottom line, I'm here to support this community in any way possible, to make your user experience as pleasurable as possible, especially now with everyone being forced to work from home etc, so no idea is too crazy to suggest; we can then discuss it together and see if and how the idea may see the light of day! I'm looking forward to be working with you and the rest of this community.
Oh, that's nice! (Very early congratulations on that achievement) That's definitely something Fandom would like to help you celebrate in style!
I see this wiki has the Wikia chat. May I ask if that is still frequented often? If not, have you ever considered switching to Discord? Many wikis across Fandom are making that switch, since it allows for more freedom and organizing with way less glitches. If this is something you'd like to do, I could help you set it up.
The reason I ask is because we can perhaps set a meeting together to spitball ideas about how you'd like to celebrate, and Discord could provide an easy medium for that, as it will allow you to hold a private conversation with all the admins to make this decision together away from the curious eyes of the community so the surprise is kept until celebration day. Considering the different time zones most people are in, you don't have to be present for the live chat -- although that would be most idea -- as you can just read up on everything at your own time.
Just let me know how you'd like to proceed with this!
You're very welcome, though those will definitely be reiterated on the occasion!
If you'd like, I could set up such a server for you to try it out, see what you think about it. If you like it, awesome, then it could perhaps remain on the wiki and serve as your community chatroom. If not, that's just as well, it's not set in stone, so it can be easily removed from the site again. The setup would only add a small, non-intrusive box on the right rail of the recent activity page, as you can see here. (You could go bigger if you'd like, but I personally like the discretion of the box as I find the big one to be unnecessary tacky and often not in line with the general style and feel of the wiki.) Just let me know what your stance is on this, I'm happy to accommodate you either way.
It varies from wiki to wiki, also depending on the size and activeness of the community. One thing that definitely could be talked about is handing out some free Fandom swag or something else to perhaps the top 10 contributors, or the wiki could host some "User Awards", akin to the Oscars, where they could first nominate and then later vote on a winner in certain categories to then receive the swag. When my home wiki (the English Avatar Wiki) had a birthday, we hosted the Avatar Wiki User Awards, which was a lot of fun and we ended up hosting 3 sessions of them. While we did that without Fandom's assistance (it never occurred to us to ask for help there), this is definitely something we could now host together to celebrate this wiki's existence and its community.
Further, advertising the anniversary on various official social media channels is also always a possibility, which tends to have a positive effect on wiki traffic. Some wikis have hosted "group viewing sessions" where a Netflix Party or something is set up so the community could watch something together and comment on the episode as if they were all sitting together (which is easier done for something on a streaming site than a reality show, but it's just to give you an idea).
More common things are also always possible, like a birthday theme make-over, where the wiki's theme and perhaps main page design would receive a revamp to .. well, basically give the wiki new clothes sort of speak, just to do something new and refreshing to mark the occasion, like we would go out and treat ourselves on a new outfit before going out to party. On the Avatar Wiki, we also updated the wordmark for fun when we turned 7; it was obviously reverted to the original after a while, but it was a nice tidbit nonetheless.
But as I said, these are just some things at the top of my head and are by no means an exhaustive list, as each community has their own way of doing things. Fandom likes to see with the admins on a more local level would want so we can see what we can mean for them, for you. Which is why I suggested having a group conversation about this, so you can tell me any and all ideas you may have, and I can ask around to see which ones Fandom can help you out with! Or perhaps together we can even come up with something we haven't thought of yet. The sky is the limit here!
And we are live! When you have created an account, just let me know, and I will transfer the ownership of the channel to you as well as give you the admin role, so you will be able to do anything you want with the channel. When the other administrators join, you can also grant them the admin role. I created several channels to group the discussion, but you can always change anything as you see fit. I also created a Wiki Manager role for myself with more or less the same rights as the owner of the channel, just so I could help out on the server if you need help. You can create any roll you like, but just as with wiki rights, be careful whom you trust with extra abilities. Giving out the moderator role will grant access to a private moderator channel, and giving someone the admin role gives access to the moderator and admin private channel. Once I transfer the server's ownership to you, I should not be able to have access to either channel, so anything you say there is completely private except for the designated roles.
As a final note, I added a recent wiki activity channel to Discord and requested a relay of the recent wiki activity to be set up, so everyone present will be able to see everything that goes on on the wiki from Discord once it's set up.
If there is anything else you need, just drop me a message, and I'll be happy to help out!
Hey Scoop, that's great! I transferred the ownership of the server to you, as well as given you the admin role. As noted, those private channels are no longer visible to me now, so if you'd like to use those for private conversation with the other admins, they're totally at your disposal. All you need to do is invite them to the server and give them the admin role as well.
Hi Scoop! Just wanted to check in with you to see if everything was in order with the Discord server and/or if you needed any more assistance.
I also checked in with the community manager already to see what kind of celebratory gifts Fandom could offer and there are some possibilities. Just let me know when/if you and the rest of the admins are ready to talk about those plans further. Considering the times we currently live in, we would have to check whether or not the stores are open and if shipping works properly, but those are all details to be worked out if/when it becomes relevant. I just wanted to let you know already that you will have options if you would like. Stay safe!
Hey Scoop, the widget should be changed to the one you preferred now. It actually took me installing the DiscordIntegrator widget to realise that it is not the one the Dev Wiki is using, as they're using the discord widget. If I was mistaken and you did want to use the DiscordIntegrator instead, just let me know and I'll fix it.
Additionally, as you may notice on the page I just linked, you can configure the sidebar widget by adjust ... let's say the header test that now says "Community Chat", by creating the "MediaWiki:Custom-Discord-header" page and writing there whatever it is you want the header to say "Big Brother Chat" for example. If you'd like me to make this changes for you, that's no problem, then you just leave me with some instructions and I'll take care of it.
Hey Scoop, how are things? Just wanted to check in and see if everything was going well, especially after that vandal hit the wiki a few days in a row. Lucas contacted me about it on Discord and hopefully they will get bored soon (I don't really want to elaborate on public message wall as I don't want to risk the vandal reading up on this, but if you have questions, just send me a DM on Discord and I'll be happy to get you up to speed).
I also stumbled upon the privacy issues recently. That's unfortunate for wiki documentation but indeed sadly something that's out of our hands. Everyone has the right for privacy and as a European myself, I can attest that the GDPR protection goes really far. Sometimes too far even in my opinion, but it is what it is. Anyway, why I brought it up, I noticed that you added a notice on the affected page, but for better SEO (search engine optimization), I would suggest you take it down again, or at least hide it from view. You can still add it on the page itself as a hidden notice, so everyone editing the page will see it, but it will no longer show up as this ominous notice at the top of the page. The warning not to rename the page is also not necessary, as admins can protect the page to prevent anyone but sysops to rename it. It is your decision of course, I just think it will make the page look a bit better by removing it.
Anyway, hope you're doing well! Also out of sheer curiosity, how are the wiki birthday celebrations going?
But with the privacy thing. It's stupid. I don't understand it. You are on television, you are in the media. We are the media, I don't understand how we are affected but the tabloids are not and we are way less invasive. Over this reason, I have considered moving the wiki from FANDOM for a long time. It has pushed me to limits.
I'm sorry to hear that, Scoop. I know how those things go all too well, as I too am of the kind that checks in on my wiki every day, but at one point you just need to take a break. I took mine (lasted about a year, oops) last year, and it really did me good in the end. Not saying that you should disappear for a year obviously but perhaps recharge for a few days? I can check in more often to help with the vandal situation (although your admin team did a good job already with it).
The privacy thing is indeed a weird one, as you would expect that someone participating to a show like Big Brother knows that they're going to be on TV and thus in the public eye. However, as someone with a masters degree in law myself, I have learned a long time ago that logic and legal rights do not always mean the same thing, sadly enough. As said earlier, the GDPR is really thorough and sometimes even overshoots its purpose if you ask me (I'm also affected by it during my full-time job). Though the adagium dura lex, sed lex does apply. It may be hard, it may even be unexplainable, but in the end, no matter how hard it is, it is still the law, and we have little choice but to follow. As an editor, I really do understand the frustrations that come with with having your goals to be the most comprehensive encyclopedia about your subject thwarted by seemingly silly rules being enforced by "the powers that be", but in this case, I can assure you that Fandom's hands are tied just as much as yours are. Moving away from the platform would not solve anything, as the GDPR law will just follow you around. My guess it that Fandom is just a more approachable venue for the candidates to get things removed than to take it up with the tabloids and whatever other platform. But all these wiki-farms where you could possibly take this content to? Nah, they're easy targets when you clearly have the law on your side.
That said, as annoying as it may be, I think there is some comfort in the fact that it are only a few contestants that have done this. Perhaps we can make the best of it by thinking of a better or more fun way to display their pages that can barely have any content on it. Maybe a fun quote or image or something.
I know that we don't really know each other, but always feel free to contact me about anything, especially if it is related to you feeling disillusioned by Fandom actions. I can always try to help to get you more information to sort things out. Hope you will feel better soon. These times are also not making things easier to unwind.
Fandom is indeed an American company, but it basically targets the world. The GDPR applies to all individuals inside the EU, so any EU citizen has the right to request any company that provides services to them, regardless of whether or not they have to pay for it, to comply to the GDPR. So basically wiki editing is on a platform provided by an American company under American law but due to Fandom also targeting to reach EU citizens, it has to comply to GDPR and take the appropriate measures when someone exercises their rights to privacy given by that law. This article is a pretty good read about the international scope of the GDPR if you're interested to learn more about it.
