“There are still cowboys.” The title of one of João Pedro’s favorite songs sums up his essence well. Born in Goiatuba and raised in Buriti Alegre, a city in the interior of Goiás, he now lives in Bela Vista de Goiás. What all these cities have in common is the country tradition and the daily work with cattle. It’s no wonder that this 21-year-old from Goiás became a rodeo lifeguard, a profession he proudly explains:
“After eight seconds on top of the bull, the cowboy unties his hand and has to jump off. Then the lifeguard comes in. If the bull goes after the cowboy, we take the bull’s attention away. If it’s going to hurt him, it hurts us. That’s why we call the fighter. It’s to distract the bull.”[1]
