Big Brother 8 (UK) is the eighth series of the Big Brother (UK). It lasted for a record 94 days, ending on August 31 2007 when Brian Belo was crowned winner.

This series was unique in that all the housemates who entered the house on Day 1 were women, with the men entering the house periodically over the next two weeks.

Brian would later return as a legendary "Time Warp Housemate" during Big Brother 16 (UK), though he would later voluntarily leave the house. Although no housemates from this series returned to compete on Ultimate Big Brother, Amanda & Sam Marchant would return to participate in a task.

Production

House

The layout of the house for this series, remained the same as previous series, with the kitchen moving to the other side of the living room. The overall theme for the house was "annoyance", with the appliances in the kitchen being scattered around the room. The oven and heat-proof surface would be found in the bedroom and the fridge could be found in the garden. The bathtub was also placed within an open-space right next to the living room of the house.

The bedroom featured single, double and triple beds as well as two 4-person beds. A lip-shaped sofa could be found in the living room, just outside the bedroom window. There's also a salon/bathroom that features two large hair dryers and two steam suites.

Background

Before the launch programme, Channel 4 presented a statement from Ofcom explaining the racism incidents from Celebrity Big Brother earlier in the year. The statement said:

"This is a summary of findings from Ofcom, the communications regulator, about the Channel 4 series "Celebrity Big Brother". In January 2007, Ofcom received over 44,500 complaints, mainly about potentially racist material. Ofcom has concluded that Channel 4 failed to handle appropriately the strong content it was transmitting. This resulted in breaches of the Ofcom Broadcasting Code, which is designed to ensure that when broadcasters show potentially offensive material, they do so in a way which offers adequate protection to the viewer. Ofcom has found that Channel 4 breached the Code on three separate occasions. Its decision to repeat one of these incidents in its early morning show resulted in a further breach for failing to protect children. There was also a serious failure in Channel 4's compliance processes which meant that it was not aware of all the relevant activity in the House at a particularly critical time. This compounded its failure to ensure compliance with the Code. These are significant failings. Ofcom has therefore imposed a formal sanction on Channel Four, directing it to broadcast this statement. This was followed immediately by a Channel 4 ident, and then the Big Brother titles. Channel 4 also broadcast the Ofcom statement on the morning of 31 May 2007 before the early morning repeat, and again immediately before the first eviction on Friday 15 June.

Twists

• All-Female House: The 11 housemates who entered the house on Day 1 were all women.
• Male Housemates: The 7 male housemates entered the house periodically in the two weeks after Day 1. Ziggy entered on Day 3, Gerry, and Seány on Day 10, and Billi, Brian, Liam, and Jonathan on Day 17.
• Fake Week: Week 6 in the house was "Fake Week". A new housemate named Pauline moved into the house who was a fake housemate and actually British actress Thaila Zucchi. Over the course of the week, Big Brother punished the housemates for breaking rules they did not break. In addition, this week's eviction was a fake eviction, and the evicted housemate (Charley) moved back into the house after being interviewed by Davina.
• Additional Housemates: Amy, David, Jonty, Kara-Louise, and Shanessa entered the Halfway House on Day 59.
• The Halfway House: A "Halfway House" was built next to the main house. On Day 59 the five new housemates moved into the Halfway House, and over the course of the next few days, housemates would move from the Halfway House into the main house and vice versa. The four housemates in the Halfway House on Day 64 would face a double eviction, after which the remaining two would move back into the main house for good.
• Housemate Merge: On Day 69 twins Amanda & Sam, originally individual housemates, had to decide if they wanted to compete as a single housemate. They said yes, but as a result were automatically nominated for eviction.
• Gurus: Over the course of Week 11 housemates competed in a variety of mini-tasks. The winners of these tasks became "gurus" and were safe. All housemates who did not achieve guru status was automatically up for eviction. On Day 80 (eviction day) the gurus had to decide from the two housemates who received the majority of the public vote who to evict.
