Big Brother Germany first aired in 2000 with an eleven year run on RTL II ending in 2011.
After a short hiatus, the German broadcaster Sat.1 revived the show as Promi Big Brother 2013 which is a celebrity edition of the show still currently airing. In 2015 a civilian series of Big Brother Germany was aired, however, it did not return to air the following year. It later aired in February 2020 on Sat.1and ended in May 2020.
How it Works
Big Brother is a reality television show in which a group of people live together in a large house, isolated from the outside world but are continuously watched by television cameras. Each series lasts for around three months, and there are usually fewer than 15 participants. The last housemate in the house at the end of the series typically wins a cash prize.
Civilian Series
The civilian series follows people from all walks of life under the watchful eye of Big Brother. Housemates live in the house for approximately three months with the hopes of being the last person standing and winning a monetary prize usually around 100,000 Euro.
Starting with the fourth season twists and themes began to be introduced. The most famous of these twists was during season 5 when the program ran for 365 days and the winner walked away with 1 Million euros. Season 5 is the longest running Big Brother show world wide, and also was acknowledged by the Guinness Book of World Records as the longest running uninterrupted broadcast.
Celebrity Version
The celebrity edition of the show differs greatly from the civilian series that have been aired. The show follows a similar format to the civilian series except that it only lasts for about two weeks. The format is more fast paced due to the shortened time period, meaning that days 8-15 are all eviction shows with one or more housemates leaving the house per night, as voted on by the public. The Celebrities participating are playing for a 100,000 Euro prize which is ultimately awarded by the viewers during the live finale show.
