Big Brother Canada 9 is the ninth season of Big Brother Canada.

Background[]

After Global announced that the potential of Big Brother Canada was in jeopardy due to Global's amount of money lost due to the COVID-19 virus, the ninth season of the show seemed very unlikely. However, on July 13, 2020, Global announced that the ninth season of the show would air in Spring 2021. They also announced that Arisa Cox would be promoted as an executive producer of the season, and she would work alongside Erin Brock. Cox's main new roles would giving input to the show's storyline, helping with casting and outreach, and to help increase BIPOC representation in the cast.[1]

Months later on February 17, 2021, the Global TV Twitter account announced the premiere as March 3rd.[2] The official announcement stated, "Following the shocking and abrupt end of Season 8 nearly one year ago, Season 9 houseguests discover a post-apocalyptic world where the abandoned house lies waiting. The fearless houseguests must rise to conquer unexpected twists and survive extraordinary challenges as they attempt to write their own story and take the title as winner of Big Brother Canada Season 9."[3]

Airing Schedule[]

On February 17, 2021, Global announced that the season would premiere on March 3, 2021. Additionally, they revealed that the show would air three nights a week, with shows on Wednesdays (7 p.m. ET/PT), Thursdays (8 p.m. ET/PT), and a new date and time, Mondays (9 p.m. ET/PT).[3]

Twists[]

  • Teams: For the first time ever, the houseguests were split into teams. Two teams of seven were formed; Team Destiny and Team Defender. Canada voted to determine the two Team Captains during the preseason. The Captains had to choose their teams on Night 1, and in return they were granted safety for the first week. Whoever wins the HOH grants their entire team safety for the week as well, meaning they can only nominate and ultimately evict members of the opposing team. The team twist lasted for the first two weeks of the game, and was abolished at the beginning of the third week.
  • Instant Eviction: In Week 1, the teams competed against each other, with the entire winning team being safe. The losing team members were all nominated for eviction, except for their Captain, but all houseguests will vote to evict, except for the winning Team Captain. There was no Power of Veto competition for the week. If the eviction vote ties, the winning Team Captain was required to break the tie.
  • Skip The Slop: In weeks were Have-Nots were named, Canada would vote for a HouseGuest to be relieved of their Have-Not status, earning them a meal from SkipTheDishes in the process.
  • Invisible HOH: In Week 5, the HOH was Invisible, meaning that no one else knew who was HOH except for that person, but they were allowed to tell people if they wanted to do so. Since no one knew who the HOH was, they were allowed to compete in the POV Competition and the following HOH Competition, but still could not cast an eviction vote that week.
  • Fake Double Eviction: In Week 8, the week concluded with a Fake Double Eviction, with the two evicted houseguests of the night facing off in a head to head Re-Entry Competition, where one would immediately return to the game, while the other was permanently evicted, all in one night.
