Big Brother Canada 1 is the debut season of the Canadian version of Big Brother. The season premiered on February 27, 2013 and later on May 2, 2013 Jillian MacLaughlin was crowned the winner over Gary Levy with a 4-3 vote.
Background[]
Big Brother Canada is based upon the American series of Big Brother. The series is produced by Endemol USA and Insight Productions. Big Brother Canada 1 began airing on February 27, 2013. It was confirmed that more than 10,000 people applied to be on the series. Due to a high amount of applicants for the show, fifteen houseguests were allowed to enter, rather than the original intended fourteen. In January 2013, it was revealed that Arisa Cox will host the series.
The format for the series is similar to the US version, in which a group of contestants, known as "HouseGuests," compete to win the series by voting off fellow HouseGuests and being the HouseGuest to receive the most jury votes. Houseguests vie to win the HoH, PoV, and avoid staying off the block. If a houseguest makes it past a certain number of evictions, they reach the jury stage, where they vote for the houseguest they wish to win the game and the grand prize.
The House[]

Alliances[]
- The Sheyld was the first alliance ever in Big Brother Canada's history. The alliance consists of Peter Brown and Alec Beall. It is a reference to the wrestling group also known as "The Sheyld." The Sheyld was relatively successful throughout most of the season, with Alec and Peter's tactics to throw competitions and remain out of the limelight proving to work. Yet, the downfall of The Sheyld came when Alec's lies and throwing competitions became too obvious, and when his and Topaz's showmance fell apart, which culminated in his elimination. Peter, now solo for the final few weeks of the game, was eliminated soonafter, with his ties to Alec clearly known.
- Quattro was another alliance consisting of Peter, Alec, Tom and Emmett which began during the first few weeks of the game. However, Quattro soon fell apart as Tom was eliminated, and Emmett decided to make an ally in Jillian. Peter and Alec decided to form an alliance between the pair of them which they had earlier formed before Quattro, entitled "The Sheyld." (see above)
- The Secret Wedding was a short-lived alliance held between Gary and Topaz, with Gary opting to work with his friend in secret in order for them to triumph over their fellow HouseGuests. However, this alliance was short lived as Gary found himself evicted from the game soon after, and Topaz's showmance crumbled, leaving her alone in the house until her elimination from the game.
- The East Coast Alliance was another major alliance in the house in the final few weeks of the game, with Emmett, Jillian, Andrew and Talla making up the four within it. However, it soon became clear thanks to Emmett nominating Talla in one week, that the alliance was not as steady as they first thought, and that Emmett and Jillian were planning to make it to the final two over Andrew and Talla. The East Coast alliance was pined against the Southern Border, consisting of Topaz, Peter and Alec at first.
- The Fourgy Alliance was formed while Gary had HOH power. It consisted of Gary, Topaz (his closest ally), Alec (her showmance), and Peter (Alec's closest ally). Though not emphasized all agreed to work together. This is obvious when Peter explains to Jillian that if she were to vote him out he would have three people in jury (unknowing to the fact that Gary was returning to the game) who would automatically vote for whoever she was against.
Game History[]
Week 1[]
On Day 1, the original fifteen HouseGuests entered the house. Immediately after the House Guests entered the house, it was revealed that a phone had been placed in the storage room of the house, which could ring at anytime and would continue to ring until answered by a HouseGuest. The House Guest who answers the phone will be given a secret task or mission to complete; success meant reward, while failure meant punishment. By answering the phone first, Suzette Amaya became the first Head of Household, and was given one hour to decide which two House Guests to nominate. She chose to nominate Emmett Blois and Tom Plant for eviction. Tom won the "Power Popper" Power of Veto competition. Tom later chose to remove himself from the block, with Kat Yee being nominated in his place as Suzette thought that Kat was playing the game too hard. Kat was evicted by a vote of 11-1.
Week 2[]
Following Kat's eviction, Jillian MacLaughlin won the "Lumber Jack and Jill" HOH endurance competition. Jillian initially hoped to target Danielle Alexander for eviction, however, Emmett and the Quattro alliance attempted to convince her to target Aneal Ramkissoon for eviction. Jillian chose to nominate Aneal and Gary Levy for eviction. Gary was the winner of the "Oh Snow You Didn't!" Power of Veto competition. Danielle, in an attempt to gain Jillian's trust, offered to go up as a pawn to ensure Aneal's eviction from the house. Gary chose to use the Power of Veto on himself, with Danielle being nominated in his place. When rumors of a female alliance began to form around the house, the Quattro alliance attempted to gather the votes to evict Danielle from the house. Danielle was evicted by an 8-3 vote.
Week 3[]
Following Danielle's eviction, Tom Plant won "Popular Vote" Head of Household competition. Tom chose to nominate Gary Levy and Suzette Amaya for eviction, with Suzette being his main target for nominating him on the first night. Tom won his second POV of the season in the "Puck Off" Power of Veto competition. During the competition, Suzette, angered by mistakenly knocking herself out of the competition called Tom a "f*****g redneck." Tom chose to use the Power of Veto on Gary, choosing to nominate AJ Burman in his place in an attempt to ensure Suzette's eviction. It was revealed that the viewers had been voting to save one of the two nominated House Guests, and that the nominated House Guest with the most votes would be removed from the block. Suzette received the most votes, thus was safe from eviction. Tom, as Head of Household, was required to nominate a House Guest in her place, he chose to nominate Aneal Ramkissoon. Aneal became the third House Guest evicted by an 8-2 vote.
Week 4[]
Round 1[]
Following Aneal's eviction, Emmett Blois won the "Bees Knees" Head of Household competition. On Day 23, the House Guests learned that Emmett, Alec Beall, Jillian MacLaughlin, and Talla Rajaei had all broke the rules during the Head of Household competition, and that they would all be Have-Nots for the week. In addition, Emmett's Head of Household title was taken away, and the four would not be able to compete in the new competition. That same night, Gary Levy was victorious in the "Remember That" Head of Household competition and later chose to nominate Liza Stinton and Tom Plant for eviction. Alec Beall won the "Big Brother Bonspeil" Power of Veto competition and chose not to use the POV despite being in the Quattro alliance with Tom. Though Liza was initially the target, the House Guests feared Tom as a physical player and debated evicting him. Tom became the fourth houseguest evicted, by a 8-1 vote. Shortly after, it was announced that this week was a double eviction week.
Round 2[]
During the double eviction, Andrew Monaghan won the "Face Off" Head of Household competition. Minutes later, he chose to nominate Liza Stinton and Suzette Amaya for eviction. Emmett Blois won the "Kid In a Candy Store" Power of Veto competition. Emmett chose not to use the Power of Veto. Liza then became the fifth House Guest to be evicted from the house in a unanimous vote of 8-0.
Week 5[]
Alec Beall was victorious on the "The Great Urban Adventure" Head of Household competition. Alec decided to target Suzette Amaya for eviction, as he had previously learned that Suzette saw Alec and Peter as the two people controlling the game. Alec chose to nominate Suzette Amaya and AJ Burman for eviction, with Suzette being his main target and AJ being the pawn. Emmett Blois won his second straight POV in the "Cabin Fever" Power of Veto competition. Emmett chose not to use the Power of Veto and keep the nominations the same. Suzette was evicted by a 6-1 vote.
Week 6[]
Round 1 (Instant Eviction) []
Following Suzette's eviction, Topaz Brady won the "Before or After" Head of Household competition. Topaz learned in the Head of Household room that she had five minutes to nominate two House Guests for eviction, unbeknownst to Topaz, the other remaining House Guests watched her make her decision. Topaz chose to nominate Andrew Monaghan and AJ Burman for eviction, with Andrew being her target. It was then revealed that it would be an Instant Eviction, which meant there would be no Power of Veto competition. Though Topaz believed she had the votes to evict Andrew, Alec Beall and Peter Brown later decided to turn against her and instead evict AJ from the house. AJ was evicted by a 4-2 vote and became the first member of the Jury.
Round 2[]
Andrew Monaghan was victorious in the "Diary Room Confessions" Head of Household competition. Though he was upset with Topaz due to her nominations, Andrew later debated targeting Gary for eviction. Andrew chose to nominate Topaz Brady and Gary Levy for eviction, with Gary being his main target. Emmett, feeling as though his allies Alec and Peter were closer to each other, made an alliance with Andrew, Talla Rajaei, and Jillian MacLaughlin to make it to the end together; the four became known as the "East Coast" alliance. Andrew won the "Build a Demon" Power of Veto competition. Andrew decided not use the Veto and keep his nominations the same. Gary was evicted by a unanimous vote of 5-0.
Week 7[]
Round 1[]
Following Gary's eviction, the HouseGuests competed in the "Iceberg Alley" endurance Head of Household competition. When Jillian and Topaz were the only two remaining players, Jillian promised both Topaz Brady and Alec Beall safety, and Topaz promised Jillian MacLaughlin and Emmett Blois safety; Topaz later stepped down, making Jillian the new Head of Household. That night, Jillian told her new "East Coast" alliance that she would be breaking her word, and would not be keeping Alec safe that week. Jillian chose to nominate The Sheyld, Alec and Peter Brown for eviction. Peter was victorious in the "Bridge to Veto" Power of Veto competition. Peter chose to use the Power of Veto to remove himself from the block, with Topaz being nominated in his place. Alec was evicted by a 3-1 vote.
Round 2[]
Following this, the House Guests participated in the second Double Eviction of the season. Emmett Blois won the "Plead Your Case" Head of Household competition. Emmett then chose to nominate Talla Rajaei and Topaz Brady for eviction. Peter Brown won his second Veto in the "You've Got Mail" Power of Veto competition. Peter chose to keep nominations the same. Topaz was evicted by a 3-0 vote.
Week 8[]
Following the Double Eviction, Jillian MacLaughlin won her third HOH in the "Chicken Flew the Coop" competition. Jillian chose to nominate Andrew Monaghan and Peter Brown for eviction, with Peter being her main target. Andrew was victorious in the "Sleep Tight with the POV" Power of Veto competition. Andrew chose to use the Power of Veto to remove himself from the block, with Talla being nominated in his place. Peter was evicted a unanimous vote of of 2-0. Following this, the House Guests learned that the viewers had been voting for one of the four Jury members to return to the house. Gary received the most votes, and re-entered the house as an official House Guest that night.
Week 9[]
Following Peter's eviction and Gary's return to the house, Emmett Blois won the "Brick by Brick" Head of Household competition giving him his second HOH of the season. Emmett chose to nominate Andrew Monaghan and Gary Levy for eviction. Gary won his second veto of the season by accepting the most punishments in "The Price of Veto" Power of Veto competition. Gary chose to use the Power of Veto on himself, with Talla being nominated in his place. Andrew was evicted by a unanimous vote of 2-0.
Week 10[]
Round 1[]
Following Andrew's eviction, Jillian MacLaughlin won her fourth Head of Household of the season in the "What the Dunk" Head of Household competition. Jillian chose to nominate Gary Levy and Talla Rajaei for eviction. Emmett Blois won his third POV in the final Power of Veto competition of the season, "Big Brother Break-In". Emmett chose to leave Jillian's nominations the same, and minutes later cast the sole vote to evict Talla from the house.
Round 2[]
The final three House Guests later competed in the "No Blood on My Hands" first part of the final Head of Household competition. Emmett Blois was the winner, advancing him to the third and final round. Gary and Jillian later faced off in the second round of the final Head of Household competition, in which they had to go through an obstacle course and throw rings with the House Guests names on them onto a designated area in the order of which they won Head of Household. Gary Levy was the winner, advancing to the third and final round. Emmett and Gary competed in the final round of the Head of Household competition, in which they had to answer questions based on the evicted House Guests strategies prior to entering the game. Gary was the winner, making him the final Head of Household; he chose to evict Emmett from the house minutes later, making Gary and Jillian MacLaughlin the Final Two.

Major Events (excluding competitions)[]
Conflicts between Suzette and her fellow HouseGuests[]
Conflict between Suzette and Tom, Day 1 - Day 23[]
There were several conflicts between HouseGuests during this season, with the most notable source of conflict being HouseGuest Suzette, who caused plenty of rifts throughout the house. The most notable rival of Suzette was Tom. The rivarly developed thanks to Suzette nominating Tom on the first night based on first impressions, and Tom's bitterness on seeing his rival out of the game afterwards. Suzette claimed she enjoyed winding up Tom, and sniggered at his nomination of her during the third week of the season. This left Tom angry, and thus he, in an outburst, called her a liar and a cheat and stormed off out into the backyard. Tom soon learned that an emotional Suzette did not care about the money anymore, she just wanted to see him out of the game before herself. On Day 21, during the "Puck Off" Power of Veto competition, Tom ensured his safety, by winning the Power of Veto for the second time. This angered Suzette, who had knocked herself out of the competition by mistake beforehand. Knowing Tom's delight at this, Suzette called Tom a "f*cking redneck." Later, Suzette apologized, yet she knew her rival was not about to keep her in the game. Suzette found herself on the block multiple times after this event, however, it was Tom who was evicted before her on Day 23, in a vote of 8-1. This ended the fight. However Suzette was later evicted.
Conflict between Suzette and Aneal, Day 21[]
Although not a notable conflict throughout the season, Suzette and Aneal shared a bout of an argument on Day 21, after Suzette was put up on the block for the second time. An emotional Suzette went to cry out in the store room, and was confronted by a relatively happy Aneal who asked if she was okay. Suzette appeared not to hold in her thoughts any longer, saying that he is a liar, and that he does not "give a f*ck" about her. Aneal tried to respond, but it was clear Suzette's outburst was emotionally led, not only because of her consecutive timings up on the block but also to avenge Danielle's eviction.
The Showmances[]
Topaz and Alec[]
In addition to the conflicts in the house, showmances were also a major theme throughout the season, with one of the most prominent being between Topaz and Alec. Formed early in the season, Topaz and Alec's 'showmance' or 'cuddlemance' was very unsteady going into the latter half of the season, when Alec went against Topaz's wishes as Head Of Household and nominated AJ instead of Andrew, the person Topaz really wanted out. Topaz decided that this lack of trust, adding to feelings of doubt in their relationship in previous weeks, meant they should call time on what ever they had. Topaz found a stronger ally in Gary following the ending of her relationship with Alec, yet it was clear she still cared for Alec, despite his apparent on-off feelings for her expressed in the Diary Room. Her caring culminated spitefully in the later weeks of the season when she found Talla in Alec's bed only days after she and Alec had split up. Topaz decided not to stand for it, and called Talla a slut for doing so, yet she had gotten the wrong side of the situation. Topaz later made up for her actions to everyone involved, and her and Alec's relationship was reignited soon afterwards. Alec's intentions for reconciling however seemed not so much based on his love for Topaz, but more as a game move. Nonetheless, Topaz encouraged those in the house to vote to keep Alec on Day 43 when he was up on the block, but to no avail. Alec was evicted from the game on Day 43. On coming out of the house, the pair of them seemed to have mixed ideas on how and if they were to carry on their relationship outside of the Big Brother House.
Jillian and Emmett[]
In what looked like a genuine relationship in comparison to Topaz and Alec's, Jillian and Emmett spent most of the game in a showmance together, and were often regarded by their fellow HouseGuests as the 'Power Couple'. This was because both of them were very strong physical competitors, with Jillian winning a catastrophic four Head Of Household wins during the season, and Emmett close behind on three. Following the ending of the Quattro alliance and Tom's eviction, Jillian and Emmett grew closer, and it was then, to pinpoint, that their showmance blossomed. The pair of them went to the finale night, with Emmett being evicted in third place on Day 71 and Jillian winning the season on the same night. Following the season's culmination, it was quite likely that Emmett and Jillian would be seeing each other in real life as opposed to just in the House, with both of them showing genuine feelings for one another.
Liza, Tom and Peter: Love Triangle[]
Liza, the schemer and so-called 'snake' of the season, seemed to not care for the men in the house, except for Peter. The pair of them formed quite a strong bond over the many weeks they were together in the game, which Peter put down to their leveling intellectual mind games. Yet, Peter was wary of Liza's game playing and her schmoozer and snake tactics that she used on every man of the house, most importantly Tom. Soon, many, most notably Emmett, clocked on to her games, and decided enough was enough. Tom and Liza stuck together during the time they were both nominated, but it was unclear at whether Liza had strong feelings for Tom or Peter.
Conflict between Talla and Gary, Day 37[]
On Day 37, a slop-infuelled Gary lost his temper with Talla, who asked simply if he could turn the stove off which included the Have's chilli. Gary, being a Have-Not, said arrogantly that no he would not do this. Talla told him in retaliation not to act like a child, yet this landed her in a head-to-head quite literally confrontation with him. Gary fronted his opinions, shouting from the top of his voice. Talla appeared distraught over the event, but Emmett broke it up, and the pair patched up their relationship thereafter.
Trivia[]
- All of the POV holders this season were male.
- First season ever to have a houseguest vote for the wrong person.
