Big Brother 9 (US), also known as Big Brother: 'Til Death Do You Part is the 9th season of the broadcasted edition of Big Brother (U.S.). It began on February 12, 2008 and concluded on April 27, 2008 when Adam Jasinski was crowned the winner with six votes from the jury. This season was unique in that it was the first season of Big Brother to air during the winter as a result of the 2007-2008 Writers Guild of America strike.

Background[]

Development[]

Following the 2007-2008 Writers Guild of America strike, the trade magazine Variety reported that CBS, in response to the then-ongoing Writers Guild of America strike, was considering airing a winter edition of Big Brother, and that the network started cast auditions.[1][2] Several sites speculated that the winter edition could have been an American version of Celebrity Big Brother but this was untrue as CBS released a statement that the next edition of Big Brother would be a regular season following the format of past editions.[3] Allison Grodner and Rich Meehan returned as executive producers, and Julie Chen continued as the host.

Casting[]

CBS launched its casting call process on November 15, 2007, with auditions running from November 17 to December 8, 2007 with Robyn Kass serving as the casting director.[1] The network organized casting events in 17 cities across the country, including major locations like Los Angeles, New York, and Houston. Despite the buzz about a potential early start for the season, CBS confirmed that the show would air in 2008, with specific premiere dates yet to be announced. The finalists for the season were chosen on December 27, 2007.

Twists/Changes[]

  • Soulmates: Instead as playing as individuals, the 16 Houseguests were paired off based off of compatibility forms during their audition progress. They would win and hold the title of Head of Household together, win and use the vetos together, be nominated together, and be evicted together. This twist was abandoned shortly after the third eviction, where the evicted couple found out that a re-vote would occur only between the two of them. Should a member of the pair walk or be expelled, the remaining partner would choose one member of the previously evicted couple to re-enter the game and become their soulmate.
    • X-Factor: Houseguests Sharon Obermueller and Jacob Heald used to date before entering the house, and ended up being paired together.
    • Power Couple: The winners of the first competition became the Power Couple and had to instantly evict another couple from the house.
  • Previously Evicted Houseguest
    • Due to Neil Garcia leaving the game, his soulmate; Joshuah Welch, had to choose either Jacob Heald or Sharon Obermueller; the previous evictees, to re-enter the game as his soulmate. Joshuah chose Sharon.
    • Shortly after the fourth eviction, the Houseguests had to vote either; the Houseguest they just evicted, or the "Mystery Houseguest"; a previous evictee voted by the viewers, back into the game.
  • Secret Relationship: Houseguests Ryan Quicksall and Jen DiTurno were in a relationship prior to the game, and entered the house while still dating, however they weren't partnered together.
