Development
First news of this season was announced by the show itself ahead of an official renewal announcement from CBS, with a casting call being aired during the Final Four eviction episode of Big Brother 26 (US).
On October 29, 2024, a season 26 post-season interview with executive producers Allison Grodner and Rich Meehan was held, where they teased that the "essence" of the three nominee and live competition for safety twist of the AI Arena is likely to return for season 27.[1] During the season premiere, it was confirmed that the twist has been renamed to the "BB Block Buster", and Julie Chen-Moonves claimed that this was now a "permanent part of the Big Brother' game".
On May 14, 2025, it was announced that the season would have a 90-minute premiere on Thursday, July 10, 2024, followed by another 90-minute episode the next Sunday. The traditional Sunday, Wednesday, Thursday episode schedule returned, with all episodes airing at 8 PM throughout the season. In a first, all Wednesday episodes will be 90-minutes for the duration of the season, while the Sunday and Thursday episodes would return to an hour long following the premiere week.
It was also announced that a special companion show, Big Brother: Unlocked, would air every other Friday at 8 PM starting on July 25. The companion show would feature an alumni panel of three "All-Stars", similar to the special episode aired last season featuring winners Cody Calafiore, Taylor Hale and Jag Bains. This totals up to four and a half hours of Big Brother on air weekly, the most hours since its launch, honoring the 25th anniversary of the premiere with this "super-sized" season, marketed as "the biggest season ever".[2]
On July 2, 2025, the house pictures were revealed alongside the main theme of the season: "A Summer of Mystery", the house itself being designed as a haunted hotel by the name "Hotel Mystère". Many twists for the season were hinted, including the announcement of a special "mystery houseguest" alongside a tease at more secrets as is the theme. It was also announced that the Live Feeds would begin after the first Sunday episode on July 13, confirmed the continued absence of a live premiere/move-in and Night 1 Feeds like with BB26.[3] It was reported that the houseguests will move in on July 8, four days after the 25th anniversary of the first move-in during Big Brother 1 (US).
Twists
The Mastermind
A hidden safe in the foyer...
...and even the Diary Room is hidden!
- BB Block Buster: Returning from the previous season, the HOH must nominate three houseguests for eviction and the newly renamed BB Block Buster will give houseguests a last chance opportunity to save themselves on eviction night. Unlike last season, the twist did not end when jury began.
- A Summer of Mystery: "The Big Brother House is transformed into a suspense-filled hotel, complete with secrets, hidden passageways and a mysterious vibe that sets the stage for a summer of intrigue.
- Premiere Night Mystery: "The Mastermind" kicked off the season by kidnapping Julie and stealing the "HoH Relic". This forced the houseguests to split into two groups of eight to try to recover each of them. Each group would compete in a competition where the winner would receive a game-changing prize.
- Four-Person HoH Competition: The player who successfully reclaims the HoH Relic would be given the power to choose the four houseguests who would be eligible to compete in the first Head of Household competition, including the option to include themselves or not.
- BB Buy-Off: The player who successfully finds Julie will publicly win $10,000. What the other houseguests do not know is that this player will be able to use this money to buy their way off the block. If they are a final nominee at any time during the pre-jury phase, they can give all of the money to the HoH and remove themselves from the block, forcing the HoH to name a replacement nominee on the spot. The HoH cannot refuse the bribe, and the power can only be used once.
- Mystery Houseguest: Easter Eggs pointing to a secret returning player's identity were hidden in plain sight around the house. Following a week of teasers on social media following the official cast reveal, Big Brother 13 (US) winner Rachel Reilly was revealed to be joining the game at the end of the premiere.
- Secret Accomplice: Following Rachel's reveal, it was also announced that one of the 16 new houseguests was actually in cahoots with The Mastermind, and helped them pull off the prior acts during the night. The remaining houseguests, including Rachel, were then tasked with unmasking The Accomplice. If they fail to identify the correct person with a majority vote, The Accomplice joins the game as the true 17th houseguest and their identity remains a secret, but if the houseguests manage to figure out their identity, they will be exposed and immediately be evicted from the game.
- Premiere Night Mystery: "The Mastermind" kicked off the season by kidnapping Julie and stealing the "HoH Relic". This forced the houseguests to split into two groups of eight to try to recover each of them. Each group would compete in a competition where the winner would receive a game-changing prize.
- Secret Power Competition: In Week 2, the houseguests were able to compete for special powers within the BB Break-In HOH competition. All of these powers expire at the start of the jury phase. The outgoing HOH was allowed to compete solely for one of the powers, while everyone else was able to go for a power or the HOH.
- HOH Interrogation Power: The person who wins this power will be able to take over another player's HOH. However, after this power is activated, the original HOH will be able to interrogate every other houseguest, and if they correctly identify who tried to usurp their HOH, they remain in power. If they fail to identify the correct person, they will be dethroned and the usurper will be announced as the new HOH.
- Mystery Competitor Power: If they find themselves on the block, the person who wins this power will be able to double their chances at winning POV by summoning a former houseguest (later revealed to be Big Brother 20 (US) winner Kaycee Clark) to enter the house and take up one of the two randomly selected Veto spots. If the former houseguest wins, they will earn the POV on behalf of the player who activated the power.
- Mystery Veto Power: The person who wins this power will be able to invoke a second POV competition exclusively for themselves at the end of the Veto Ceremony, giving them the sole opportunity to secure a second Veto for the week. They can activate this power whether or not they are a nominee.
- The Mastermind's Month of Mayhem: Going into Week 9, there was less than a month left in the house, yet 9 houseguests were still in the game as the jury phase had just begun. Julie announced that The Mastermind would be wreaking havoc during the final month of the game, in order to ensure that there would be three houseguests left on finale night. His goal was to collect three "sacrifices" taken out of the game through one of the following twists:
- White Locust Resort Special Elimination: At the start of Week 9, the houseguests would check into the "White Locust Resort", headed by Big Brother 20 (US) runner-up and fan favorite Tyler Crispen. However, by the end of their stay, one houseguest would not be checking out, with a special surprise elimination taking place that night, sending the first houseguest to the jury as The Mastermind's first sacrifice. The rest of the week would then continue on as normal, ending with the eviction of the second juror in eighth place.
- Call Out Chain: Returning from Episode 3 of Big Brother: Reindeer Games, the houseguests would first compete for safety. The winner would then call someone out, and that person would need to complete a new competition in a set amount of time or immediately be evicted. If that houseguest successfully completes their round, they would call out the next person to compete, and that person will have less time to do so, with the same rules, until someone fails and is evicted. Of the players who completed the competition and survived, the person to do so in the fastest time would be made the new HOH, even if they were the outgoing HOH the week prior.
- Double Eviction: Week 10 saw two houseguests leave on Day 73, where seventh place was decided after the final Block Buster of the season, followed by the sixth placer in a traditional Double Eviction triggered by The Mastermind immediately after.
- The Mastermind's Sanctum Week: To finish up his Month of Mayhem, The Mastermind would take full control of Week 11. The week consisted of two rounds, with a mid-week "unique eviction vote" helmed by The Mastermind occurring to determine fifth place. All traditional competitions and ceremonies would take place, but at random times designated by The Mastermind, earlier than they would in a regular week. The HOH competition and all ceremonies took place in this Sanctum, and the nominations were done with voodoo dolls in place of the keys. Following this, fourth place was determined live on Thursday with Julie as normal, locking in the final three as they head into finale night.
- Public Eviction Voting: This week, the eviction vote was held in the Sanctum, where the two voting houseguests were given needles, and would have to publicly stab the voodoo doll of the houseguest they chose to evict. In the event of a tie, the HOH would break the tie by once again stabbing their target's voodoo doll.

Trivia
- This is the first season where 14 houseguests voted in the first eviction. The prior seasons that featured 17 houseguests did not feature this for a variety of reasons:
- In Big Brother 17 (US), the 17th houseguest did not officially join the game until Week 6, so Week 1 featured the standard 16 houseguests with 13 casting votes.
- In Big Brother 19 (US), the first eviction was a Premiere Night Eviction which featured 3 nominees, and the 17th houseguest was only allowed to vote in the event of tie as part of the Big Brother Swap twist, leaving only 13 voting houseguests.
- In Big Brother 25 (US), the 17th houseguest had already joined the game and was allowed to vote, so the first eviction was intended to have 14 voting houseguests. However, another player was expelled from the game during the week, and production chose to continue on with the eviction as scheduled, leaving 16 houseguests and 13 casting votes as normal.
- This is the first season where every male houseguest was nominated for eviction at least once by Week 5.
- This feat was almost accomplished during Big Brother 13 (US), but was not truly achieved due to Dick Donato having walked from the game in Week 1.
- This is the first season to feature an 8-3 gender split at the Final 11, in the favor of the women.
- This is the first season since Big Brother 4 (US) to have a second consecutive woman winner after the prior season.
Ratings
While each Unlocked episode is officially classified as a regular episode of BB27, it is separated from the main show for the purpose of these charts. For example, Unlocked Episode 1 is listed as BB27 Episode 8 on channel guides and streaming services, while the season finale is listed as BB27 Episode 39 but is really Episode 35 of the main show.
