Big Brother 19 (US) is the 19th season of the broadcast edition of Big Brother (U.S.) and the 20th season overall.

Background[]

Development[]

Big Brother 19 was confirmed on August 10, 2016 when Endemol Shine North America and CBS renewed their two-year contract to extend the series to Big Brother 20. Host Julie Chen and executive producers Allison Grodner and Rich Meehan will be returning for another season.

Casting[]

Casting opened on February 17, 2017. Then four months later, the cast was revealed live on CBS All-Access where one by one they were interviewed by Big Brother 11 & Big Brother 13 houseguest Jeff Schroeder.

Twists[]

  • No Napping: Returning from Big Brother: Over The Top, houseguests cannot sleep during the day and must follow the mandatory curfew.[1]
  • Den of Temptation: America will vote on which Houseguest they would like to send into the 'Den of Temptation' to be enticed by a potentially game-changing offer. But its always a game of risk vs. reward, as every temptation will unleash a consequence on the house.[2]
    • Pendant of Protection: If one houseguest takes the temptation, they will be immune from the next three evictions. This power was won by Paul Abrahamian.
    • Ring of Replacement: If one houseguest takes the temptation, they will be able to swap places with one of the three players chosen by random draw if they’re not one of the six houseguests playing. This power was won by Christmas Abbott.
    • Halting Hex: If one houseguest takes the temptation, they will be able to stop any of the next four evictions. This power was won by Jessica Graf.
  • Seventeenth Houseguest: Along the sixteen new houseguests, Paul, returned to play the game as a result of the first temptation.
  • Big Brother Swap: As a result of the first temptation, Paul will swap with one housemate to take their place in the house.
  • Battle Back Competition: Returning from Big Brother 18 (US), the first four evictees will have a chance to re-enter the game.
  • Temptation Competition: Following Jessica Graf's acceptance of the Den of Temptation, a new competition entered the house. For weeks 5, 6 & 7, houseguests have the option to opt in to compete in a special Immunity Competition where the winner of the competition will win immunity for the week while the last place finisher will be automatically nominated as a third nominee.
  • Tree of Temptation: Starting in Week 8, 9, & 10, the Tree of Temptation was activated. There are 5 apples, and before nominations, a HouseGuest can pick one by being the first to the Diary Room and saying they want to claim one when the lights on the Tree turn red: (Save a Friend, Can't Play in Next HoH, Bounty on Your Head, Eliminate 2 Eviction Votes, and Second Veto). If an apple is chosen, they will either get a prize or punishment. Whatever is received from the apple is only in play for the week it is chosen and must be used that week.
    • Save a Friend: In Week 8, Mark Jansen chose the first apple and received the Save a Friend prize. He chose to save Paul, granting him immunity for that week.
    • In Weeks 9 & 10, nobody chose an apple, so there were no prizes or punishments given out to anyone that week.

Once all 16 new houseguests entered the Big Brother house for the summer, Julie Chen announced that this year would be the Summer of Temptations. Immediately, the houseguests were tempted with $25,000, but Julie warned them that every temptation comes with a consequence, or a curse. After Alex Ow, Cody Nickson, Jason Dent, Kevin Schlehuber, Mark Jansen, Ramses Soto and Raven Walton pushed their buttons, Kevin was anonymously revealed to be the fastest and thus accepted the cash temptation. In doing so, he released the first curse onto the house, the entrance of Paul Abrahamian. However, Julie spoke to the houseguests and revealed that Paul would not only be entering the house, but would be taking the place of one of the current houseguests and someone would be leaving the house by the end of the night in first ever BB Swap. The house was then told that they must tempt Paul as he had the power to grant immunity to eight houseguests. Once Paul chose his eight houseguests, the other eight competed to win immunity and three of said Houseguests would be automatically nominated. By the end of the competition, Christmas Abbott, Jillian Parker, and Cameron Heard had been nominated for eviction. After deciding to decide who is evicted through a house vote rather than a competition, Cameron Heard was the first HosuseGuest evicted by a vote of 8-3-2.

Following Cameron's eviction, the houseguests competed in teams for the spot of the first Head of Household. During the competition, Josh Martinez decided to take the Temptation and got the Golden Apple, granting himself immunity, but taking his entire team out of the HOH, which worked out for Kevin, because he was forced to throw the competition anyways as punishment for taking the first temptation. Once it was down to two remaining teams, each team selected one houseguests to compete for the spot of Head of Household, resulting in Paul Abrahamian competing against Cody Nickson. After a head-to-head battle, Cody Nickson became the first Head of Household of the summer. After conflicts within the house impacted his decision, Cody then decided to nominate Megan Lowder and Jillian Parker for eviction, with Megan as his target. The following days proved to be tumultuous as the house erupted in multiple conflicts resulting in Megan deciding to walk from the show. With one spot open for nominations, Cody decided to listen to his alliance and nominated Alex Ow in her place. Julie Chen then announced the Den of Temptation twist to the house, where for the next three weeks one House Guest would be tempted by America for a special power, but every temptation comes with a consequence. For the first temptation, America decided to tempt Paul with the Pendant of Protection, granting him immunity for the first three evictions. With his acceptance of the temptation, a curse was unleashed onto the house; one houseguest would be forced to nominate oneself during one of the next three evictions in addition to the HOH's two nominees. Ramses Soto was then cursed and forced to nominate himself in the coming weeks. At the veto competition, Cody regretted his decision and decided to throw the competition to Alex, where she won the first Power of Veto of the summer. At the Veto ceremony, Alex used the veto on herself and Cody attempted to blindside the house and target Paul. However, once he announced that Paul was his replacement nominee, Paul revealed the Pendant of Protection and that he was immune for the next three evictions. Still in need of a replacement nominee, Cody moved on to nominate his fifth HouseGuest of the week, Christmas Abbott. Following these moves, Cody ended up breaking apart his existing alliance. At the eviction, Jillian was blindsided and evicted by a vote of a 8-4.

Following Jillian's eviction, the HouseGuests competed for HOH, where Paul became the new Head of Household. Wanting to target the showmance of Cody Nickson and Jessica Graf. He began the week with nominating Josh Martinez and Alex Ow as pawns, and Ramses Soto decided to nominate himself as part of the curse. In the Den of Temptation, Christmas was tempted with the Ring of Replacement, allowing her to replace a player in the Veto Completion and play herself. At the Veto competition, Paul won the Power of Veto, although Ramses, who was supposed to throw it, ended up getting second place, leading him to be distrusted by many. Paul then decided to use the veto on Josh Martinez, successfully backdooring Cody Nickson when he was evicted by a vote of 7-3-0.

Following Cody's eviction, the houseguests competed in the Head of Household competition where Alex became the new Head of Household. At the nomination ceremony, Alex decided to nominate Jessica Graf and Dominique Cooper for eviction, with Dominique as her target. Once her closest ally Jason won the Power of Veto, her plan reamined intact. In the Den of Temptation, Jessica was tempted with the Halting Hex, giving her the power to halt any one of the next four evictions. By accepting the Hex, she unleashed the Temptation Competition, a competition that would come into play during Week 5. The house, led by Paul, began to isolate Dominique, further ensuring her fate. Even though several conflicts through the week involving Jessica, Josh, and Mark sprouted, the target remained the same and Dominique was evicted by a unanimous vote of 10-0.

Following Dominique's eviction, the first four houseguests secretly competed in the Battle Back Showdown. After defeating his fellow evicted houseguests, Cody was given the opportunity to compete against a house challenger. If he won, he would re-enter the game. If he lost, he would officially be evicted from the house. After defeating house challenger Paul, Cody officially re-entered the House. At the Head of Household competition, Jessica won her first competition of the summer and became the new HOH. After several fights between the two, Jessica decided to target Josh, nominating him and Ramses Soto as a pawn. Since the house remained wanting to go against Cody and Jessica, Paul led a plan to blindside the couple and evict Ramses, keeping their arch rival, Josh, in the game. At the Veto Competition, Jessica continued her winning streak and won the Power of Veto. Prior to the Veto Ceremony, Jessica began to wonder if the house was planning on blindsiding her and was close to using the veto on Ramses to ensure her target would be evicted. After deciding to not create any waves in the house, Paul and his allies decided to blindside Jessica and Cody, and Paul's own alliance members Elena and Mark who were close to the duo, by evicting Ramses with a vote of 7-3.

Following Ramses' eviction, Paul became Head of Household for the second time this summer. Jessica attempted to scare the houseguests by announcing she held a special power that could keep her safe for the week. Since Jessica accepted the Halting Hex, the Temptation Competition was unleashed onto the house, giving the houseguest the option to compete for safety. The houseguest who comes in first would win immunity, but the houseguest coming in last would automatically be nominated. Mark then won the competition and became immune for the week, and Jason came in last, resulting in his automatic nomination. Choosing to call Jessica's bluff, Paul continued his plan to target the duo of Jessica and Cody, he decided nominate the pair for eviction. This sent the house into chaos with fights erupting between Paul and Jessica and Cody, Josh and Mark, and Jessica and Cody themselves. At the Power of Veto competition, Paul won the Power of Veto for the second time of the summer. At the Veto Ceremony, Paul used the Veto on Jason. Since he was nominated by the competition, there was no replacement nominee. In an attempt to get Jessica not to utilize her power, the house once again erupted, with the majority of the house taunting and wreaking havoc against Jessica and Cody. All of this proved futile when Jessica decided to unleash the Halting Hex on eviction night, resulting in no eviction taking place.

Following Jessica's unleashing of the Halting Hex and cancelling of the eviction, Josh became the new of Head of Household. At the Temptation Competition, Cody and Jessica devised a plan to ensure they would not get backdoored. Cody came in first in the competition, winning immunity, while Jessica purposely came in last, automatically becoming the third nominee. Since Jessica was already nominated and Cody was ineligible, Josh was forced to nominate two other houseguests other than those the house was targeting. After deciding he would rather see Elena leave this week than Jessica, Josh nominated Elena and Mark for eviction with Elena as his target. During the Veto Picking, Christmas used her Ring of Replacement to take Cody's place in the Power of Veto competition, however she could not play due to her injury. Mark ended up winning the Power of Veto and despite many people trying to convince him not to use it, he vetoed himself, forcing Josh to have to nominate someone else. Raven decided to volunteer, so she went up as a pawn. Josh still wanted to get out Elena and not Jessica, but after taking many shots at her in public, and then trying to speak to her privately and give her hints of his plan, she didn't want to hear it from him, leading to a huge fight between them and Cody. Cody had tried to rally votes against Raven, but the fight had sealed Jessica's fate, and so on eviction night she left in a 7-1-0 vote.

Following Jessica's eviction, Alex won her second Head of Household of the season. Julie announced that The Jury phase had begun, and that there would be no Jury Battle Back, meaning that all evictions from this point onwards are permanent, with the evictee being sent to the Jury house until finale night. Paul had already begun formulating a plan for Alex to backdoor Cody. Alex planned on nominating Mark and Elena, with someone else throwing the Temptation Competition and get nominated so that they can increase their numbers in the Veto competition, and lower the chances of Cody competing. Mark ended up winning the Temptation Competition for the second time, and Matthew got nominated, setting the plan in motion, however she did need to think of a new pawn to put next to Elena since Mark was immune, and so she ended up nominating her main ally Jason alongside Elena, both as pawns to attempt a backdoor on Cody. Matthew ended up winning the Veto, and plans to Veto Jason, allowing for Cody to go up on the block, because if he Vetoes himself, then there will be no replacement, and Cody stays safe. Cody tried to get Alex to turn on Paul and nominate Raven, but Alex stuck to the plan, so when Matt Vetoed Jason, Cody went up, setting him up to be the first Juror and first casualty of the Double Eviction, which is exactly what happened on eviction night, with a 7-0-0 vote, making Cody the 1st member of the Jury.

Following Cody's eviction, Jason won Head of Household for the first time. He quickly nominated Mark and Elena because of the fact that they were targeting Paul. Despite being close, Jason couldn't win the Power of Veto, and Mark ended up doing so, getting his second Veto win of the season, which then sealed Elena's fate. He took himself off the block, so Jason decided to put Matt up as a pawn once again. With the house united against her and Mark, Elena was then evicted in a 6-1 vote, with only Mark voting to keep her, making her the 2nd member of the Jury.

Following Elena's eviction, Christmas won her first Head of Household competition. After taking out all 3 of his potential allies, including his showmance, the target was set on Mark. However, the Tree of Temptation twist came into play, and Mark decided to pick the first apple. He got a prize, but it was not the prize he wanted; he ended up getting the Save a Friend and chose to grant Paul his 5th immunity of the season, in an attempt to work his back into his good graces. Christmas nominated Jason and Matthew as pawns, and despite him saving Paul, she still wanted to backdoor Mark. Mark was drawn for Veto, but Jason ended up winning for the second time, so it appeared that fate was sealed for Mark. Despite his strong campaigns, he was still nominated when Jason saved himself, however that did not stop him from continuing to campaign. However, his efforts only gained him 2 sympathy votes from Jason and Alex, and he got the 4 votes to evict from the others, so he was evicted as the 3rd member of the Jury.

Following Mark's eviction, Jason won his second HOH of the season. He initially revealed to Kevin that he and Alex gave Mark sympathy votes, but then retracted that statement and started telling others the rogue votes were Kevin and Raven. The Tree of Temptation was lit up, but in an unexpected turn of events, nobody went to pick an apple, removing the Tree from play this week. Jason then nominated Matt and Raven for eviction. Matt planned on using the Veto on Raven if he won it himself, with Kevin as the most likely candidate for the replacement nominee. However, Jason won the Veto, and was originally going to save Raven and renominate Kevin, as promised during the nomination ceremony. However, Jason was tired of having his game dictated for him by other people, so he went back on his word and chose to remain loyal to Kevin, keeping his nominations the same. In an effort to get himself evicted over Raven, Matthew decided to violate his Have-Not restrictions, and gained 1 penalty vote for eviction. Matt's plan worked, and he ended up getting evicted in a vote of 6-0, making him the 4th Juror.

Following Matthew's eviction, Christmas won HOH for the second time this season. Paul's plan was to go after Jason and Alex, and so that's who Christmas decided to nominate for eviction. The Tree lit up before noms once again, but again nobody chose an apple, so the twist was officially over. Jason feared that he was going to get evicted, but Alex kept shooting down his worries. Meanwhile, Josh began to get suspicious of Paul's plan, but Christmas shot him down as well. Paul wanted Alex to be Vetoed and Kevin to go up next to Jason, and then he votes with Alex to keep Jason, while Josh and Raven vote to keep Kevin, forcing the votes to tie, having Christmas then evict Jason, which then keeps Alex from being mad at him. Paul then won the POV for a third time and told Alex that he was going to save her, so it looked like his plan was officially set in motion, and Jason's game was about to be over. Josh was worried about Paul's plan only helping himself and not the entire alliance, but Christmas got angry at him and told him to speak to Paul. Paul shot down Josh's theories that were true in reality, and convinced him that the plan helped all 3 of them. Josh finally gave in, and stopped fighting back, so at the Veto Ceremony Paul saved Alex and Christmas put up Kevin. Although Alex thought it was game over for Kevin, it was really game over for Jason. On eviction night, it was announced that it was another Double Eviction, and so when voting began, Paul's plan entered the final stages, as the votes tied, and Christmas broke it, evicting Jason in a 3-2 vote and sending him to the Jury as the 5th member.

Following Jason's eviction, Alex won HOH for a third time. Due to Paul voting with her and faking a fight with Josh, she was convinced that he was still her ally, and so she decided to listen to him and nominated Raven and Kevin for eviction instead of Christmas and Josh. In a very close Veto competition, Josh ended up winning his first for the summer. He didn't use it, and despite Alex wanting Kevin evicted, Christmas and Paul decided now was the time to evict Raven and so that was how they voted, while Josh voted to keep her, and so she ended up leaving in a 2-1 vote and became the 6th member of the Jury.

Following Raven's eviction, Josh won his second HOH of the summer. As expected, he remained loyal to Paul and Christmas and nominated Alex and Kevin, with the intent of evicting Alex. He thought about exposing Paul's game to Alex and taking him out, but decided against it. Any chance he had to take out Paul was then lost when Paul won his fourth POV of the season. Alex still thought he was going to save her, so when he told her that he wasn't, she got extremely upset although she promised she wouldn't be a bitter Juror. Josh was still pondering about going after Paul in the final weeks if he had the chance, as it's his only option to win the game. At the Veto Ceremony, Paul went through with his plan and did not use it, leaving Alex and Kevin on the block, with Alex's game basically over. Paul voted to keep Alex, while having Christmas vote to keep Kevin, forcing a tie so that Josh would have to evict Alex, which is what happened, causing Alex to be the 7th member of the Jury.

Following Alex's eviction, Paul won his third HOH. Staying loyal to his Final 3 deal, he nominated Josh as a pawn against his final target Kevin. All the while, Kevin thought he was safe against Josh, but once Paul won the POV for the fifth time, Kevin's game was finished. At the live Veto Ceremony, Paul did not use it, and Christmas cast the sole vote to evict Kevin shortly after, sending him to the Jury as its 8th member, leaving the Misfits in the Final 3.

On finale night, Josh beat Paul and became the Final HOH of the summer.
