Azäh Awasum

Azäh Awasum was a houseguest on Big Brother 23 (US).

A member of the Jokers, Azäh’s plan from the get-go was to target the first HOH of the season. Unfortunately, that plan went awry, as she was put on a team with that very person, as well as Derek Frazier and Britini D'Angelo. Despite the chaotic HOH reign of Frenchie French, Azäh grew incredibly tight and loyal to the members of her team. It even got to the point where she offered to go up on the block in Britini’s place one week, concerned for her friend’s mental state at being a pawn. That being said, she did have some room to play, considering she was part of The Cookout alliance. Playing to ensure the first Black Big Brother winner was Azäh's main priority and goal in the game.

As the weeks went along, the Cookout rolled through its master plan, picking off anyone outside its inner circle. Throughout that, Azäh was able to stay off the block, making bonds with people her alliance would soon send off to the jury house. When the Cookout succeeded in their mission and made the final six, Azäh won her first (and last) bit of power that season, becoming HoH. Despite a number of pitches from Hannah Chaddha that the men had a deal to get to the end, she chose to target Hannah anyway. Initially, it seemed that she would be the next to go, but Xavier Prather’s choice to boot Kyland Young over her got her to finale night, one competition away from winning the final HOH. Shockingly, going into finale night, she had changed her mind about taking Derek F. to the end, getting infuriated by his continued insistence that she did nothing and he carried her all game. However, Azäh didn't get the chance to make that decision, as Xavier won the final competition and sent Azäh to the jury, make her place 3rd and become the 9th and final member of the Jury.

Favorite activities: I love cooking! It’s one of my favorite pastimes. I am also an avid biker (just completed a century earlier this year) and a world traveler (26 countries and counting!)

Who are your favorite Houseguest duos? Those who became best friends in the Big Brother house or had a showmance?
I can’t stand showmances! I love duos. My favorite Big Brother player (Jun) was part of a duo. Alison and Jun from BB4 dominated the house with loyalty only to each other! I hope to get a powerful partner in the house and sit with them in the final two.

What are you most excited about living inside the Big Brother house?
I’m really looking forward to hopefully competing in OTEV. I am a beast at musical chairs, so I hope to get that Veto in the bag!

What do you think will be the most difficult part about living inside the Big Brother house?
Definitely being without my phone and not having my close ones beside me. I’m lucky to have most of my family in the area with me. I’m going to miss them and my seven best friends!

What is your favorite past moment on Big Brother?
Keisha’s birthday in BB10 is hands down one of my favorites! Too many iconic moments, Libra screaming her accolades to Jerry, Jesse instigating, Dan staying out of trouble, that sad “Happy Birthday” after everyone just finished screaming at each other… classic.

What is your strategy for winning the game?
Spot the power players early and annihilate or divide them one by one! Play for MYSELF, not the house. I’m hoping my amiable appearance will cause the guests to let their guards down with me. I want every Houseguest to feel like they have me in their pocket. Finally, I make really good decisions as long as there is no romance involved. NO SHOWMANCES!

My life’s motto is…
“You haven’t started living until you’ve started living for others.” This motto might not serve me the best in this game though… we’ll see!

What would you take into the house and why?
-My spices because I have no idea what seasonings they have in the house and I need some flavor in my life!
-My bicycle and my speaker because I’m always at peace when I’m riding it and listening to tunes.
-My afro pick because fro is life.

-My grandfather was a polygamist with 6 wives and 47 children, I have over 300 cousins!
-My name means “able to make friends.”
-Avid traveler! Prior to Covid, I visited four countries per year.
-Afraid of manholes.
-Attended Messianic Jewish school for primary school upbringing.^[1]

Azah returned in Big Brother 24 (US) with the rest of The Cookout alliance to discuss the season during Week 11's eviction episode.
Azah and Derek F were interviewed for the Big Brother: 25th Anniversary Celebration ahead of Big Brother 25 (US).

The Challenge[]

Azah competed on the first season of The Challenge: USA^[2], CBS's spin-off of the flagship MTV series, which featured Big Brother, Survivor, The Amazing Race and Love Island contestants. Fellow BB23 houseguests Alyssa, Derek X, Kyland, Tiffany and Xavier also competed, alongside Angela Rummans, David Alexander and Enzo Palumbo. In Episode 5, she was randomly paired with Love Island's Cinco Holland Jr. and they ended up getting eliminated.

In 2017, prior to her appearance on Big Brother, Azah competed in Miss Maryland USA, making to the Top 5. ^[3]
Azah is the first African-American woman to compete in the third part of the Final HOH.
